The National Commission of Senior Citizens, in cooperation with DSWD Region VII and other government agencies, held the program for the National Celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week on October 1, 2023, at SM Seaside, Cebu City. The celebration started with a Eucharistic Celebration at the San Pedro Calungsod Chapel, followed by the Walk for Life and Zumba dancing. The formal opening of the Elderly Filipino Week was done at the City Wing of SM Seaside Mall.

Chairperson and CEO of NCSC, Atty. Franklin Quijano, Commissioner Reymar Mansulingan, Representative of Governor Gwen Garcia, Dr. Jean Loreche, Councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover, and Councilor Francis Espares are among those who graced the event.

In her message, DSWD-7 Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero expressed her gratitude to the senior citizens for their legacy to the younger generations. Lucero also encouraged the seniors to spend more time with the children and the youth, to tell stories of their struggles and victories, and to continue to teach and impart the treasured values and virtues to the young people.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Reymar Mansulingan explained the logo of the NCSC. The logo depicts senior citizens as a light to all of us, while at the same time showing the commitment of the NCSC to supporting the elderly. He emphasized the national respect that we give to the elderly, especially the centenarians.

Atty. Franklin Quijano, NCSC Chairperson and CEO, exhorted the senior citizens to count their blessings and acknowledge the skills they can teach their children and grandchildren. Quijano also discussed the different monetary and non-monetary benefits for seniors. Finally, he encouraged everyone to take care of their health and to seek the reinforcement of a strong family.

This year’s celebration carries the theme: Honoring the Invaluable Legacy of Filipino Senior Citizens. ###
