The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-7 recently conducted a capability-building workshop training for the hired tutors and youth development workers in Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.

Batch 1 training participants for the Capability Building of Tutors and Youth Development Workers, together with the resource persons from the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED), pose for a photo opportunity after wrapping up day 1 of the training session.

Some 487 tutors and 97 youth development workers, who are 2nd–4th-year education students from the Cebu Normal University (CNU), participated in the training, which ran from April 1–5, 2024 in Mandaue City.

The training program was divided into two batches to suit the large number of participants, allowing for personalized attention and effective facilitation of learning activities. With this, participants had ample opportunities for interaction and collaboration throughout the training.

This activity aims to fully equip tutors and youth development workers and help them understand thoroughly effective teaching methodologies, learner engagement techniques, and learning approaches. The training also aims to enable them to tutor non-reader grade school learners and facilitate the Nanay-Tatay Teacher session for parents effectively and efficiently.

Ms. Claribelle Luz Rivera and Ms. Blesilda Malillin of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) discussed the Guidebook for Tutors and Workbook for Learners. They also facilitated the group teaching demonstrations of tutor participants.

During the interactive workshop training, Ms. Rivera and Ms. Malillin shared the importance of integrating these resources into the tutoring process. The guidebook will help tutors provide personalized and impactful support to the learners they will teach. Complementing the Guidebook for Tutors, the Workbook for Learners is a supplementary resource to support tutees in their learning journey.

Invited resource persons from the Department of Education (DepEd)-National Capital Region (NCR), Ms. Yolanda de Guzman and Ms. Alona P. Villamon, talked about the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) and Quick English Reading Assessment Tool (QERA) designed to evaluate the learners’ literacy, including reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and phonemic awareness.

For the Youth Development Workers (YDWs) participants, Ms. Maureen C. Velasco of the Social Technology Bureau (STB) of the DSWD Central Office discussed the Introductory Activity on the Nanay-Tatay Teacher Modules and provided valuable guidance and tips in conducting the Nanay-Tatay Teacher Sessions with the parents. After the lecture, participants had a return demonstration, allowing them to practice and apply the concepts and techniques learned during the session. This hands-on approach provided the participants with opportunities to enhance their skills, receive feedback, and refine their practice in conducting the Nanay-Tatay teacher sessions effectively.

Training participants gather together in groups during a breakout session to brainstorm and prepare for the teaching demonstration during the first day of capability building.

Director Lucero further emphasized that their efforts as tutors and youth development workers in building relationships with learners and parents are beneficial not only on a micro level but also have far-reaching implications for the country’s development. Director Lucero encouraged the participants to give their best and enjoy their journey in the Tara, Basa! Program.

Through the collective commitment and collaborative efforts of partner tutors and YDWs, the capacity-building activity prepared the participants for their shared mission of promoting holistic development and creating a meaningful learning journey for the learners and parents in the community.

The program will deploy the tutors and YDWs on July 1, 2024, for the learning and Nanay-Tatay teacher sessions. ###
