Elsie and Martin Dugso show the lettuce they produced through hydroponics gardening.

To help promote food security in their community and earn additional income, Elsie and Martin Dugso started hydroponics gardening in 2011.

Hydroponics is the art of growing plants without soil.

The couple is a Pantawid Pamilya grantee and supplies their produce to different resorts in the province of Siquijor. They sold their lettuce at 100 per kilo.

According to the couple, they can harvest the lettuce one month after it was planted.  This yields them 70 kilograms per harvest. But this is not enough to supply other resorts in the island.

“We are planning to plant more lettuce through hydroponics farming.  We wanted to increase the volume of our harvest for us to be able to meet the demand of the vegetable in the resorts and eventually increase also our income,” said Elsie. She said one resort for example, orders 15 kilograms per day.

Elsie and Martin also share their experience in hydroponics gardening to other Pantawid Pamilya partner-beneficiaries during Family Development Sessions.  They hope through sharing their knowledge on the technology, other families would also benefit from it. ###
