In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the girls of the Home for Girls took part in a noteworthy livelihood activity designed to enhance their skills and support their rehabilitation.

Having experienced trauma from abuse and violence, the children crafted artificial rose bouquets using satin fabric, hot melt adhesives, wooden sticks, and other materials while also making heart-shaped chocolates as part of their skills training.
Their creations, such as artificial rose bouquets, were sold for ₱50 each, while the handmade chocolates at ₱25 each. DSWD staff purchased these items on Valentine’s Day. They placed orders through social media platforms or at the DSWD Field Office in Brgy. Carreta, Cebu City, where HFG staff went around to sell the products.
Center Head Jenifer B. Abastillas emphasized that the goal of the livelihood activity extends beyond simply teaching skills. “We aim to teach these young girls not only how to craft but also how to generate income. It is vital for their rehabilitation, as it gives a sense of independence, preparing them for reintegration into their communities,” she said.
In addition to these crafts, the girls are taught other skills throughout the year, including making handwashing soap, dishwashing liquid, braided rugs, candles, and accessories such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and baking cakes and pastries.
“We aim to help our children learn how to create unique, saleable products—something they can earn from. While DSWD invests in their skills, we hope to eventually assist them in marketing their products if they continue during reintegration,” Abastillas said.
These initiatives not only offer economic opportunities but also provide a means to channel their trauma toward healing. They offer therapeutic benefits that are a crucial part of the rehabilitation process within the center, helping the children build confidence and self-sufficiency as they recover from their traumatic experiences.
The Home for Girls is also open to collaborations for special events, such as birthdays and other occasions, where they can showcase their products. Abastillas invites the public to support the center by considering their handmade crafts for future events.
