As the nation observes National Women’s Month, the DSWD Field Office 7 calls on the general public, especially women, to support initiatives and advocacies that empower women, including the fight to eliminate violence against them.

This year’s theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” highlights gender equality and women’s empowerment in nation-building.
During the kick-off event on March 3, 2025, at the DSWD 7 Convocation Area, Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero underscored the theme, emphasizing what women from all sectors can achieve when given the opportunity—specifically, the eradication of gender-based violence.
Lucero, a woman leader in Central Visayas, is recognized for her contributions to social work. She has continually encouraged the public to strengthen advocacies for women’s rights and empowerment.
DSWD 7 has prepared activities, including orientations on gender-based violence for various groups and promoting reporting mechanisms.
While the department advocates for critical women’s issues, the celebration also serves as an opportunity to spotlight the inspiring success stories of women leaders who have played a pivotal role in shaping the movement for women’s rights and women who embody resilience and serve as examples of change.
“We celebrate Women’s Month to pay tribute to the contributions of women in nation-building. Everyone needs to recognize the crucial role that every woman plays in the sectors they represent—their families, organizations, communities, and societies,” shared Lucero.
Lucero believes that while significant progress exists in advancing the rights of women—through the development of programs, increased accessibility to services, and growing recognition of the roles of women in society—violence against women and children (VAWC) continues to persist.
Lucero pointed out that despite the positive changes, much work remains to eliminate this issue.
DSWD 7, together with the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking 7—Violence Against Women and Children (IACAT7-VAWC), focuses on advocacy activities that inspire and educate, including sharing the success stories of women leaders and beneficiaries of its programs and services.
Lucero emphasized that Women’s Month is an opportunity to celebrate women leaders who shape their sectors. “May our observance inspire and educate others that women can and will continue to make a difference,” she stated.

“We also have several ways to show our support for women’s causes—our advocacy encourages everyone to join us in solidarity by wearing purple and updating their social media profiles with official frames,” said Lucero.
These actions are significant in gathering support both online and offline, as purple represents justice—a fundamental principle of the women’s rights movement.
DSWD 7 will also host its annual Miss Juana pageant. Women residents and clients from the four centers and residential care facilities compete for the title, showcasing resilience and dedication in overcoming their challenges. ###
