The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas joins the nation in celebrating the “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day” on September 23, 2024.

Saac family, a former 4Ps household beneficiary, shares a healthy meal at home.

Under Presidential Proclamation No. 326 Series of 2012, the celebration aims to encourage Filipinos to spend mealtime with their families. An observance is celebrated on the fourth Monday of September every year in conjunction with the National Filipino Family Week.

The celebration carries the theme “Pamilyang Tumutugon sa Pagbabago ng Panahon,” an overarching message of this year’s global celebration of the day of families.

As a show of support, the Department suspends work from 3:00 p.m. onwards on Monday (September 23) to encourage staff to spend quality time with their families.

Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero invites the public to practice this advocacy throughout the year. “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day must be practiced frequently by enjoying meals together. It is a simple yet effective way to create a bond between our children and the family. It is a great chance to talk and express love, concern, and understanding in the family,” she said.

Family programs

4Ps, or the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, is the country’s leading poverty-alleviation program that provides cash transfers to poor Filipino households while improving other aspects such as health, education, and nutrition. In Region 7, there are 297,030 active household beneficiaries of the 4Ps.

DSWD also leads other family advocacy, such as empowerment and reaffirmation of paternal abilities and the parent effectiveness sessions in the LGUs.

These advocacies continue to share technical assistance with community members in responding to present–day social changes and exchanging views on how they affect Filipino families.

The family is the most important unit of our society. If family relationships have good values and open communication, there will be limited societal problems. ###
