In response to the growing needs of the internally displaced families affected by the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, the DSWD Field Office 7 assisted the LGU Canlaon in establishing a total of 10 evacuation centers in different parts of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

These evacuation camps served as temporary shelters for affected families and communities living within the 6 km danger zone radius of Mt. Kanlaon.
The LGU implemented forced evacuation of affected communities after the eruption on December 9, 2024. Since then, DSWD 7 has supported the LGU Canlaon City in setting up camps in designated areas with the following breakdown of sheltered families: Camp 1: Macario Española Memorial School (333), Camp 2: Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School Uptown Campus (247), Camp 3: Jose B. Cardenas Memorial High School Main Campus (323), Camp 4: Canlaon City Sports & Cultural Center (108), Camp 5: Panubigan Elementary School (102), Camp 6: Binalbagan Elementary School (90), Camp 7: Bayog Elementary School (155), Camp 8: St. Joseph College of Canlaon (317), Camp 9: Linothangan Elementary School (101), and Camp 10: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (42).
DSWD report showed 1,809 families, or 5,911 individuals, settled in the camps. There are also displaced families who have stayed with their relatives outside the camps. Families staying in the camps and outside camps are both monitored by the LGU.
QRT Team 4 Action Officer Aileen G. Cuevas said that the provision of temporary shelters along with essential provisions are standard in camp management and camp coordination functions of DSWD. “Our role as QRT groups is to ensure that these camps are established and properly organized to ensure the well-being of the IDPs,” she added.
DSWD gave tents to LGU for the Child-Friendly Spaces and Women-Friendly Spaces, which provide a supportive environment for the sensitive needs of women and children inside the camps. The community kitchens that the LGU established cater to their food needs.
DSWD 7 QRT members, in collaboration with the LGU personnel, closely monitored the structured activities inside the camps to ensure an organized, safe, and secure stay. ###
