Initially launched in the National Capital Region (NCR) in 2023, the Tara, Basa tutoring program has expanded to seven other cities and areas across the country, including Cebu City.
The Social Technology Unit of the DSWD-7 has already conducted various activities as part of the social preparation for the implementation of the program. These include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) among the Department of Education, the City Government of Cebu, and Cebu Normal University, as well as the conduct of meetings and planning sessions.
As part of the social preparation for the city-wide implementation of the Tara, Basa! tutoring program, the DSWD Field Office 7 recently held a meeting and planning sessions with the Cebu City school heads and identified coordinators of the 67 public elementary schools in Cebu City, as well as with the 57 barangay captains of the schools involved in the program.
This activity aims to elaborate on the objectives, mission, and vision of the program, clarify the responsibilities of school heads and Tara, Basa coordinators, in the program’s execution, and strategize methods to enhance the implementation of the program. These coordinators will serve as guides and mentors for tutors and youth development workers, which will importantly ensure the safety and well-being of both college students and learners throughout the 20-day implementation period on July 1–26, 2024.
During the session with the Cebu City barangay captains, the comprehensive overview of the program, its objectives, implementation strategies, components, and the specific roles each barangay will play in the success of the program were also discussed.
In a short message that DSWD-7 Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero delivered during the forum, she highlighted the important components of the program and the importance of reading literacy, which would significantly contribute to widening one’s perspective. She further looked forward to a successful implementation of the program in the city with the partnership of the barangay leaders and the City Government of Cebu.
“I hope you will join us in this campaign so that we can help train our parents to be more responsible so that we can have a successful implementation of the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program in Cebu City,” Director Lucero expressed. ###
